Categories group your products. A category also carries defaults that save typing when you create products, and it can mark a whole group of products as final sale so they cannot be returned. Use this page to add, rename, reorder, or remove categories.

Before You Start

  • You need the settings.view permission to open the page.
  • You need settings.edit to add, edit, delete, or import categories. Without it, Add Category, Import, and the edit and delete buttons are disabled with a tooltip that explains why.
  • Import also needs the data.import permission.

Open Categories

  1. In the deck, open Settings.
  2. Under Products & Pricing, choose Categories.
The breadcrumb reads Settings > Products & Pricing > Categories.

The Category List

The list shows one row per category, and you can sort by any column:
  • Products: how many active products are in the category.
  • Name: the category name.
  • Final sale: a Final sale badge when products in the category cannot be returned.
  • The edit and delete buttons.
When you have no categories, the list reads “No categories configured”.

Add Or Edit A Category

  1. Click Add Category, or the edit button on a row. The Add Category or Edit Category dialog opens.
  2. Enter the Name.
  3. Set the Sort Order, a whole number that controls where the category appears in lists.
  4. Optionally choose the Default UOM for new products in this category: Default Quantity UOM, Default Weight UOM, Default Length UOM, and Default Volume UOM.
  5. Optionally turn on Final sale (no returns).
  6. Click Create or Update. The button stays disabled until the category has a name.

Default Units Of Measure

The default units fill in automatically when someone creates a product and picks this category. The person can still change them on the product. Leave a unit as No default to fall back to the company defaults on Settings > Products & Pricing > Units of Measure. Editing an existing product never changes its units from the category.

Final Sale

When Final sale (no returns) is on, products in the category are blocked from returns (RMAs). A product’s own final-sale setting cannot lift the category’s flag: when either the product or its category is final sale, the item is blocked, because the most restrictive setting wins. A person who holds the Override Final-Sale Return permission can still return such an item by giving a reason.

Restocking And Handling Fees

Restocking and handling fees for returns are set as return-fee rules on Settings > Products & Pricing > Adjustments & Coupons (Applies to: Returns, effect type Fee). The Returns section of the dialog links there. If a category still has an older per-category restocking or handling rate, the dialog shows it as read-only. A matching return-fee rule always wins over it. Click Clear to remove the old rate when you save, or Undo to keep it.

Delete A Category

  1. Click the delete button on the row.
  2. Confirm “Are you sure you want to delete” the category in the Delete Category dialog.
  3. Click Delete.
A category that is still assigned to products cannot be deleted. Move those products to another category, or remove their category, and then delete it.

Import Categories

Click Import to open the import wizard for categories only. You upload a spreadsheet, match your columns, fix any rows that do not fit, and load. See Imports & Uploads for how the wizard works.

What Changes Elsewhere

  • Products: new products in the category start with its default units.
  • Returns: a final-sale category blocks its products from returns, and category-scoped return-fee rules charge restocking or handling fees.
  • Packing and reports: the same categories appear on Settings > Shipping & Fulfillment > Packing Categories and group products in reports.
  • Audit trail: creating, editing, and deleting categories is recorded in the activity log.
  • Other open sessions: when another admin changes a category, your list refreshes.
