Shipping labels are for parcel shipments. Pickup, local delivery, freight, digital, and service workflows may not require a parcel carrier label. Confirm the delivery option before treating a missing label as a block.

Confirm Label Setup First

Label buying depends on Shippo, ship-from location data, package dimensions, package weight, carrier settings, and label format. Admins set those defaults in Shipping and Fulfillment settings before the warehouse starts buying labels.

Shipping settings with Shippo connection status, carrier defaults, package defaults, and label automation controls
  • Shippo connection: required for live carrier rates and purchased labels.
  • Ship-from address: usually comes from the selected location or entity setup.
  • Destination address: comes from the order shipping address and may need validation.
  • Dimensions and weight: come from the package or product setup and affect rates.
  • Label format: should match the printer workflow, such as PDF, PNG, or ZPL.
  • Shipping rules: can influence allowed services, preferred carriers, automation, and customer charges.
Rates are only as good as package data If the package weight, dimensions, origin, or destination are wrong, the selected rate can be wrong. Correct the package before purchasing the label.

Get Rates

After a package exists, use Get Rates from the package workflow when a parcel shipment needs a carrier label. Arcus sends the package and address details to Shippo and returns available services for the current shipment.

Rate results can vary by carrier account, service availability, destination, package size, residential handling, insurance, signature requirements, and shipping rules. If no rates return, fix the missing data before trying again.

Purchase The Label

Select the correct rate and purchase the label only after the package contents and package measurements are final. A purchased label creates carrier work and stores tracking and label details on the package.

  • Tracking number: attached to the package and order history.
  • Carrier and service: saved with the package for customer and internal review.
  • Label file: available for printing or reprinting.
  • Label state: moves forward as the label is purchased, printed, scanned, and delivered.
One package, one label Multi-package orders need one label per physical package. Do not reuse one label across multiple boxes.

Read Label State

Package detail shows whether the package is missing a label or has label work ready. For parcel shipments, resolve missing-label warnings before completing fulfillment. For pickup or other non-parcel work, follow the process for that delivery option.

Package detail showing a missing shipping label warning, item in package, and fulfillment actions
  • No label: get rates and purchase a label before parcel shipment.
  • Rates: a rate has been returned and the user still needs to choose or purchase.
  • Purchased: label exists and should be printed before carrier handoff.
  • Printed: label has been sent to the printer and can be reprinted if needed.
  • In transit: carrier has scanned the package. Avoid voiding or repacking without an exception process.
  • Delivered: carrier has marked delivery complete.
  • Voided or refunded: the old label should not be used. Get new rates before shipping.

Use PrintNode for direct-to-printer label workflows. Each user can choose a default label printer and document printer in Printing settings. If the printer is offline, resolve printing before handing the package to the carrier.

Printing settings with PrintNode connection state, default label printer, default document printer, and auto-print on fulfill
  • Default label printer: usually a thermal 4x6 printer.
  • Default document printer: used for packing slips, invoices, pick lists, and letter-size documents.
  • Auto-print on fulfill: sends print jobs automatically when the workflow supports it.
  • Manual print: use the approved download or browser print process when direct printing is unavailable.

Void Or Repack A Label

Void the existing label before changing the package contents, weight, dimensions, or carrier service. The label describes one specific package. If the physical package changes after purchase, the old label may no longer match the shipment.

  • Before carrier scan: voids are usually possible, depending on carrier rules and timing.
  • After carrier scan: voids are usually blocked or handled as a carrier exception.
  • Refund timing: carrier and Shippo refund timing can vary and may not return funds immediately.
  • After void: correct the package, get new rates, purchase a new label, and print the new label.
Never ship with a stale label If the label was bought for a different box, weight, address, or service, do not use it. Void it when allowed and buy a label that matches the actual package.

Tracking And Delivery

After purchase, tracking belongs to the package and order. Carrier updates can show label created, pre-transit, in transit, out for delivery, delivered, failure, returned, or other carrier-specific states. Use tracking history when customers ask where a shipment is or when support needs to investigate an exception.

Common Blocks

  • Get Rates is unavailable: confirm the package exists, has dimensions and weight, and is a parcel shipment.
  • No rates returned: review Shippo connection, origin, destination, address validation, package size, carrier rules, and allowed services.
  • Purchase Label fails: verify the selected rate is still valid and the address or package data did not change.
  • Print Label is unavailable: confirm a label exists and the user has a valid PrintNode printer selected.
  • Void Label is unavailable: the label may already be scanned, voided, refunded, or outside the carrier void window.
  • Tracking does not update: some carriers do not update until the package is scanned.
  • Wrong customer charge: review shipping rules, free shipping, flat rate, and actual carrier cost separately.
