Putaway is the step after receiving where warehouse staff move items from the receiving area to their assigned storage locations. This step ensures items are organized and ready for picking.
Putaway Workflow
Typical putaway process:- Items arrive and are received into a Receiving bin
- Warehouse staff inspects items for damage or defects
- If acceptable, items are placed into Storage bins
- If damaged, items are moved to Quarantine
- System is updated to reflect the new bin location
Perform Putaway
- Go to Warehouse or access your putaway queue.
- Find items in Receiving bins that need to be put away.
- For each item:
- Verify the condition (no damage)
- Scan or select the destination storage bin
- Confirm the move
- The system updates the inventory location

Quarantine Damaged Items
If items are damaged or defective:- Move them to a Quarantine bin instead of Storage
- Note the damage in the item detail or activity timeline
- Escalate to your manager for disposition (return to vendor, scrap, discount for sale)
- Do not place damaged items in Storage where they could be picked
GL Impact
Putaway typically does not post GL entries (movement within the same location). However, if your entity tracks inventory by bin type for GL purposes, putaway from Receiving to Storage may trigger an entry.Troubleshooting
“Destination bin does not exist” - Create the storage bin first. See Bin Setup. “Bin is at capacity” - The bin is full. Move some items out to another bin or pick items from this bin to fulfill orders. “Items are still in Receiving bin” - If putaway did not complete, verify the confirmation step happened. Check the activity timeline.Related Articles
