# Fixed Asset Categories

> Use Fixed Asset Categories to control capitalization defaults, depreciation defaults, GL mappings, and vendor bill auto-capture behavior for owned fixed assets.

<Warning>
  Fixed asset categories are accounting policy controls. Confirm GL mappings,
  useful life, depreciation method, and capitalization threshold with accounting
  before changing production settings.
</Warning>

## Open Fixed Asset Categories

1. Open **Settings**.
2. Choose **Entity Settings**.
3. Open **System**.
4. Choose **Fixed Asset Categories**.

## Review Category Defaults

Each category can supply defaults for:

* Useful life.
* Depreciation method.
* Asset cost GL account.
* Accumulated depreciation GL account.
* Depreciation expense GL account.
* Tax class or reporting category where configured.

These defaults speed up asset creation, but accounting should still review each
asset before placing it in service.

## Vendor Bill Auto-Capture

Auto-capture can create pending fixed assets from posted vendor bill lines that
meet capitalization policy. Use it when AP and accounting want potential assets
surfaced automatically for review.

Auto-captured assets still need:

* Asset name and category review.
* Placed-in-service date.
* Location and ownership details.
* Useful life and depreciation review.
* Approval from the accounting owner.

## Common Blocks

* **Asset was not auto-captured**: confirm vendor bill status, GL account, category mapping, and capitalization threshold.
* **Wrong depreciation defaults appear**: update the category, then review assets created after the change.
* **Existing assets did not change**: category defaults usually affect new or pending assets, not posted historical depreciation.
* **GL account is missing**: confirm the account is active and appropriate for the asset workflow.
