# Install and Update Arcus Command

> Install the Arcus Command scanner app on an Android device, keep it up to date from the in-app banner, and replace an older copy that will not update.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Arcus Command is the Android app your warehouse team uses on handheld scanners to pick, pack, capture serial numbers and fulfill packages. It is installed from your company's download page, not from an app store, and it tells you when a newer version is ready.

## Before You Start

* An Android device running Android 8.0 or newer, with a web browser.
* Your entity code. An admin finds it in Arcus under **Settings > Scanners**.
* A user with a PIN for the scanner app.

## Install Arcus Command

1. On the device, open the download page and tap the Arcus Command download. The file is named `Arcus-Command.apk`. The browser may warn that the file might be harmful, as it does for any app downloaded outside an app store: tap **Download anyway**.
2. When the download finishes, tap **Open** (or open the file from the browser's Downloads list).
3. The first time, Android asks whether to allow installs from the browser. Tap **Settings**, turn on **Allow from this source**, go back, and open the file again.
4. Tap **Install**. Google Play Protect may say **App scan recommended** because it has not seen this app before: tap **Scan app** to have it checked first, or tap **More details**, then **Install without scanning**. Either way the app installs.
5. Tap **Open**, then enter your entity code and tap **Connect**, or tap **Scan Setup QR** and scan the code an admin shows you.
6. Pick your name and enter your PIN.

> [!TIP]
>
> The permission in step 3 is asked once per device. You can turn it off again afterwards under **Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps**; turn it back on before the next update.

## Update Arcus Command

Arcus Command checks for a newer version when it opens and every few hours while it stays open.

1. When a newer version is ready, the Dashboard shows **Update available** with the new version number.
2. Tap **Download**. The browser downloads the new version (tap **Download anyway** if it warns about the file).
3. Tap **Open** on the finished download, then **Update**, and answer Play Protect as in step 4 of [Install Arcus Command](#install-arcus-command). Android says **App updated**.
4. Tap **Open** and enter your PIN. The app keeps your entity, your user and your settings.

You can also check on demand: open **Settings** (tap your initials on the Dashboard), then tap **App updates** under **About**. The row says whether you are up to date, when it last checked, or which version is available.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Tapping the close button on the banner hides it until the app restarts. The update stays available under **Settings > About > App updates**.

### When an update is required

If your version is too old to keep working with Arcus, the app shows **Update required** instead of the Dashboard. Tap **Download update** and install it as above. Tap **Check again** if you have just installed the new version and the screen is still showing.

## Replace an Older Copy That Will Not Update

Copies of Arcus Command installed before October 31, 2026 were packaged differently, so the new version cannot install over them. Android says **App not installed** or reports that the package conflicts with an existing one. Replace the old copy once:

1. Press and hold the Arcus Command icon, tap **App info**, then **Uninstall**.
2. Install from the download page, as in [Install Arcus Command](#install-arcus-command).
3. Enter your entity code again and sign in with your PIN.

After this one replacement, every later update installs over the app from the banner.

## Which Version Am I On?

Open **Settings** and look under **About**. The first row shows the version, the build number and which build you have installed. The build number is what decides whether an update is newer.

## Troubleshooting

| What you see | What to do |
| - | - |
| **Download** does nothing, and a message names a web address | The device has no browser that can open it. Install or enable a browser, or open the address on a device that has one. |
| **App updates** says "no release is published for this build yet" | Nothing has been published for this build of the app. Your current version keeps working. |
| **App updates** says it could not reach the release file | The device is offline or the network blocks the download address. Connect to Wi-Fi and tap **App updates** again. |
| **App not installed** when installing an update | This is an older copy. Follow [Replace an Older Copy That Will Not Update](#replace-an-older-copy-that-will-not-update). |
| Android blocks the install | Allow installs from the browser (step 3 of [Install Arcus Command](#install-arcus-command)), then open the download again. |
